When you play in a district with such power house teams like Mt. Juliet, Beech, Oakland and Siegel, every week is a must win situation even non-district weeks. The Wilson Central Wildcats and LaVergne Wolverines squared off Friday night in a non-district match up for the ages. Both teams were coming off a loss from the previous week and both were in a must win situation to keep hopes of a winning season alive.

LaVergne showed up to prove themselves much improved over last years 2 -8 team.  They wasted no time, scoring on third and long of their first drive with a 64 yard pass from senior quarter back C.J. Fore to junior wide receiver Quinn Jernighan. Fore passed for 338 yards and 5 touchdowns, Jernighan lead the team in receiving with 6 receptions for 205 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Wilson Central quickly answered on their first drive of the game with a 69 yard touchdown run by Alex Price. On the night Price accounted for 124 of the teams 367 rushing yards. Even though LaVergne dominated the first half of play with their passing game, Wilson Central was able to keep themselves in the contest due in large part to their explosive selection of running backs.

In the second half of play Wilson Centrals experience and senior leadership showed to be too much for the young LaVergne team. After trailing at the half of what looked to be a Wolverines victory in the making, the Wildcats showed up ready to play in the second half. Wilson Central dominated the clock but LaVergne’s quick strike ability kept the game very close and exciting.

A few small but costly mistakes made a huge difference in the outcome of the game for LaVergne. A failed fake field goal attempt by LaVergne from their own 10 yard line would have given the Wolverines a 7 point lead early in the 3rd quarter. A fumble on their own 9 yard line would have given the Wolverines 1st & 10 with less than 4 minutes to go in the game and a chance to take the lead.

Wilson Central wins their first game of the season 45 – 34, next week they play at the 0-2 Portland Panthers. LaVergne is now 0-2 on the season and will face StewartsCreek next week.
